Things you didn’t know about Simon Kimutai Biography
Back as a street hustler, Kimutai enrolled for a diploma course in purchasing management at the Kenya Polytechnic. To supplement his studies, he opened a carpentry shop in Dagoretti Corner in Nairobi.
With a keen eye for business, in 1991, Kimutai bought his first 14-seater matatu with the proceeds of his carpentry business to ply Nairobi’s Kangemi route. His foray into the turbulent public transport sector had begun. A little later, he bought his second matatu and employed a driver. After purchasing his third vehicle, he quit being a driver as he embraced his leadership qualities. He says:
“After being in the business for a while, I saw the need to organise the matatus operators in the route. We formed a savings scheme whereby each member contributed Sh50 daily. The amount was then loaned to an individual on an annual basis. We later raised the amount to Sh100.”
